Tayah’s Snowboarding Accident

Tayah was enjoying the day going down the hill with her cousins, uncle and her father when she started to go a little to fast feel back onto her hands and instantly felt pain.  She sat there with no one around except her Uncle Brian.  He kept telling her to settle down and try and stop crying to she can explain what happened and where she was hurting.  People kept asking them if they needed help and Uncle Brian said no we are ok.  He says now that he didn’t think she was that hurt just embarrassed and maybe a little hurt.    It wasn’t until he checked her out and found that her right arm was ok but as soon as he took off her left glove to check her arm out and she screamed in pain he knew they needed help.  Just then the ski patrol came.  They got her all wrapped up and brought her down to the first aid center.

This is what we saw when the ski patrol said they were coming down the hill.  I wasn’t sure she was even in that papoose.

Here she was my little princess hurt and all wrapped up with hurt, fear and sorrow in her eyes.

There happened to be an orthopedic surgeon skiing that day.  He came and checked her out.  Without a doubt her right arm was broken.  There was a large bump just above her wrist.  Her right arm was questionable.  It hurt but wasn’t swelling or anything.  We decided to head to the Driggs Hospital.

This hospital is a small one and made me very nervous to take her there.  They did have an orthopedic surgeon on call so we decided to stay.  It was the best experience.  They were very good with Tayah telling her everything they were doing and helping her stay calm.  We didn’t have to wait and we had so much help right away.  They took x-rays to see what really happened.

Sure enough they BOTH were broken.  Tayah was devastated and I felt bad for her but just happy that she wasn’t lost on the hill.  The x-ray is of her left arm and it definitely needed to be set and they said her right arm was broken but not as bad but bad enough that it needed to be reset also.  This put Tayah in a panic mode.  They needed to give her meds she she would sleep so they could reset it.  They tried twice on her left arm to get an iv in and no go.  They tried again in her left ankle but still nothing.  They finally numbed the top of her foot and got the iv in there.  They asked us to leave and it was only a few moments later that the dr. gave her morphine to knock her out.  They said she was fighting it and didn’t want to sleep.  She told the dr. that she didn’t want to sleep and he said, “good luck with that” just as she was seeing the back of her eyelids.

Everything went well and they didn’t have to do any surgery just reset both her arms.  She seemed happy that is was over when she came to.    I knew that the road ahead was going to be challenging but it’s not like I haven’t been down it before.  It’s just a little different this time.

This was one of the nurses that helped Tayah relax while getting an IV and helped us and helped reassure us that all will be ok.   The dr. told us that if he didn’t know she had two broken arms by the x-ray he would have never guessed it because she handled it very very well.

She is our tough cookie.  I was so proud of her for being brave and strong.
