Track-Desert Area Qualifier

Saturday, April 25 we went to the Desert Area Qualifier Track Meet. Since there is no program in our area Kenny has taken it upon himself to train and take our kids to this track meet. We represented Wallace Elementary even though the school has no idea. This is the first year that all 3 kids could compete. They group the kids up by the year they were born. This year Zach was going up against kids a year older then him. His group was called the "midgets". Tayah was also going up against girls a year older then her. Her group was called "bantam". Trey, poor Trey, he was going up against kids 3 years older then him. He was also in the "bantam" group. This year we took the Titos with us. Shellie had shown an interest in her kids running and so she made the effort to practice with Kenny. It was fun to have other kids doing track with us. It really pushed all the kids during practice.

In the picture: Trey, Jayda, Zach, Tanner, Tayah and Taylor. Everyone had a great time cheering each other on. Zach and Taylor placed in all 3 events they entered. Tanner, Tayah and Trey didn't place in any event. Zach and Taylor get to move on to Bakersfield next Saturday.

Jayda had a fun time just hanging out with everyone. Shellie put Taylor's shoes on Jayda and she loved it. She walked around with them for a long time. She didn't even mind that it slowed her down quite a bit.
Tayah threw the shot put 11'11''. She did better then last year which is surprising because she didn't practice at all. She is so strong that I think if she practiced even a little bit she could do really well. She had a couple of great throws. She had a scratch and then the shot put rolled off her fingers weird. Maybe next time we will practice before the meet and she will do great.

Zach's best jump was 12 1/2' which got him the gold. This isn't even his best jump. The way they were raking the pits, piling all the dirt in a big pile didn't help anyone jump very far. He was really nervous about placing in this event. He had a hard time waiting for everyone to jump, he just kept pacing up and down the runway.

Tayah did good at the long jump. She jumped 2 feet farther in practice but somehow just couldn't pull it off at the meet. She jumped 7' 71/2''. She took 6th place out of 20 girls. She was the most disappointed with this event because she really thought she would do good. If she would have jumped like she did in practice she would have gotten 1st place. Maybe next year.
Trey had a great time doing the long jump. He looked so little among all those boys. There were about 20 boys in his group also. He jumped 7' 73/4''. He had a lot of energy during the long jump. I had to get after him because he was kicking and karate chopping the other boys. Thankfully he wasn't the only boy out there behaving like that. He didn't seem to care if he placed or how far he jumped, he was just having fun.

Zach ran the 100 and 200 meter dash. He took 2nd in the 100 with a time of 14.28 and took 3rd in the 200 with a time of 30.50. We wished he was in the first heat of the 200 because it was the faster heat. In his 200 heat, he blew everyone away. Doesn't matter because he placed and is moving on. The good thing is in both events he beat his personal best.
Tayah ran the 50 which doesn't move on but is a fun race to be in. Tayah came out strong but then it looked like she slowed down. She was so close to getting 2nd in her heat but in the very last few feet she fell back into 3rd place. I am not sure if Tayah enjoys track or not. She says she does but she doesn't have the competitiveness in her like the boys. Maybe one day she will not care that everyone is watching her and want to win the race. She has good form, does good and has fun which is what matters most.

I was very unsure about Trey running track this year but Trey was so excited that nothing would have stopped him. He has talked about running track for a couple of years now. He is so young and as you can tell in the picture he is so little compared to the other boys. He ran the 50 which is just a fun race. He was so excited to run especially because he had real track shoes on. He started off strong and then about 10 yards into it the older boys started to pull ahead. WARNING: the next picture may cause some emotional strain, those with a sensitive heart may not want to look!

About the 20 yard mark Trey realized he wasn't going to win. His demeanor changed in an instant from excited and happy to sadness and disappointment. He started to cry about the 40 yard mark but never stopped running. He finished the race with tears streaming down his face. About this time I really had to swallow hard because my little baby was hurting. The guy who was taking his time put his arm around him and walked him over to me saying: your son is really upset. Really??? I didn't notice the tears on his checks as he crossed the finish line. My poor baby boy. I just scooped him up and held him while he was crying hard. He really thought he was going to win the race, even though he was racing against giants. He said he wasn't going to run any more track. We talked him into doing the long jump and he didn't have to run the 100. Could you imagine what that race would have been like? I am glad he swallowed his pride and did the long jump, because he had a great time and forgot all about the big loss. More track next weekend!

Those boys were huge! Looks like a lot of fun. Funny about repping a school and they don't even know- sometimes you gotta do things like that so your kids can participate...

How sad, I felt so bad for him reading your story. You must be so proud that he finished though.
